Ghanta Ghar (Clock Tower)

Ghanta Ghar (or clock tower), in Hussainabad, is the tallest clock tower in India. It is 221 feet (67 meters) high free-standing clock tower situated in the core of the old city of Lucknow. The wheel of the clock is said to be larger than that of London’s Big Ben. Between Bara Imambara and Chota Imambara, this impressive clock tower stands amidst a green field with all its elegance. It was designed by Roskell Payne.

Clock towers in medieval India were a very common sight and were built in the middle of the busiest city markets to help people keep a track of time. Thus various Indian ancient provinces including Jodhpur, Dehradoon, Meerut, Delhi, Mumbai, and many others, have a clock tower or a ghanta ghar depicting the city's typical architecture and style. However, the one that chimes in the city of Lucknow are far more special than any clock tower in India.
