World Lung Cancer Day, marked annually on 1 August
World Cancer Day: Lucknow, Jagran Correspondent. One person dies every three minutes worldwide due to lung cancer. The magnitude of this cancer can be gauged from the fact that one out of every fifteen people is in the grip of this serious disease. That is, the sword of lung cancer is hanging on one out of every fifteen people. World Lung Cancer Day is celebrated every year on August 1 to spread awareness about how to avoid this dangerous disease and to avoid it even after falling prey to it.
According to Professor Ashish Singhal, Department of Surgical Oncology, Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences, the increasing cases of lung cancer are ringing alarm bells around the world. Worldwide, cancer of the breast, prostate, and colorectal (large intestine) combined kills as many lives as lung cancer alone.
Smoking and pollution are considered to be majorly responsible for this. In this also, about 80 to 90 percent of the cases are due to active smoking i.e. active smoking and 10 to 15 percent are due to indirect smoking i.e. the people living with the smoker are also falling prey to lung cancer. Usually, men are vulnerable to lung cancer, but due to the increasing smoking addiction among women, its cases are increasing in them too. Lung cancer is also called bronchogenic cancer. However, 20 percent of such people are also falling prey to this disease, and do not smoke.
