A. K. Sengupta's Test appearance came in the middle of a well-known controversy in Indian cricket. Ghulam Ahmed announced his retirement a few days before the Madras Test against Windies in 1958-59; and Vijay Manjrekar dropped for a severe injury, which caused a confusing situation for Jasu Patel, A. G. Kripal Singh, Manohar Hardikar, and Sengupta who were all considered. Captain Polly Umrigar wanted Hardikar in, but when the BCCI insisted that, he should opt for Jasu Patel, Polly had to resign during the night just before the match. Conclusively, Sengupta and Kripal Singh played then; that match Sengupta was dismissed for 1 and 8 by Wes Hall and Roy Gilchrist.
